When 3G is being shutdown in Glasgow and why UK networks are stopping it

Soon 3G will no longer be in use, with mobile networks shutting down the service in Glasgow and across the rest of the UK shortly.

According to Ofcom, mobile providers have decided to switch off their 3G networks, starting from early this year. And many are expected to have completed this by the end of the year.

The 3G mobile networks are gradually being switched off over the next couple of years, eventually switching it off for good at the end of 2024. But why is the use of 3G coming to an end and what does this mean for you? Here is what you need to know.

What is 3G?

The UK’s mobile services currently use four different ‘generations’ of mobile technology: 2G, 3G, 4G and 5G.

The 3G network was launched back in 2003, however, the service will soon be phased out.

Why is 3G being phased out?

Mobile providers are switching off 3G networks to make room for the better and more advanced 4G and 5G networks to help people get faster and more reliable phone services.

Do I need to do anything?

Your mobile provider will contact you to let you know if you are affected and what steps, if any, you need to take.

You may also be able to check your device settings to see if it has 4G available – try checking under ‘mobile networks’ or ‘mobile data’.

However, if you’re using an older device that doesn’t allow you to use 4G or 5G, you’ll need to get a new device.

What networks are stopping 3G?

Each mobile provider has their own deadline and timescale for when they want to stop 3G.

So far, the following mobile providers in the UK have set these dates:

Vodafone

The mobile network provider have said: "We’re starting our 3G switch off in Plymouth and Basingstoke on 28 February. We’ll be switching off 3G in all other areas by December 2023"

EE

EE have confirmed on their website that they will be saying goodbye to 3G in 2024 in order to "focus on strengthening our newer and more reliable 4G and 5G networks."

Three

In an update to their website, Three have also confirmed: "We’ll be phasing out our 3G network service gradually over the next 2 years and switching it off by the end of 2024. At the same time, we’re working on bringing you faster download speeds, better quality streaming, and an even more reliable experience with our 4G and 5G rollout. "

O2

The mobile network provider has not yet announced any switch-off plans. According to Which?, "O2 will be the only provider still offering 3G network services by 2025."
