What would you change about the Clean Air Zone plans?

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has called for 'major changes' to the Clean Air Zone (CAZ) and we want to know your thoughts.

The controversial plans caused outrage when announced earlier in January, with our survey of more than 4,000 people showing that 91% thought negotiations needed to be resumed.

Protests from taxi drivers have since taken place in both Bolton and Rochdale and we'd like to know what you think in the comments section below.

Mr Burnham met with Environment Secretary George Eustice yesterday - January 26. The Government's permission is needed in order to amend the details of the CAZ plans..

The Mayor said following the meeting that they would meet up again in the next seven to ten days to discuss changing the way the CAZ would work..

A statement from Mr Burnham's spokesperson following the meeting said: "The Mayor relayed his view, and that of the ten council leaders, that major changes are needed to the scheme to protect businesses and jobs in light of the new emerging evidence about problems in the vehicle market.

"The Secretary of State agreed to meet again with the Mayor in the next 7-10 days to agree a way forward."

The first phase of the plans are due to come into effect during May, and would see the most polluting lorries, buses and coaches charged £60 a day to drive into or around Greater Manchester.

In the initial plans, the second phase is due a year later, and would see charges of £10 a day for non-compliant vans and £7.50 a day for taxis or private hire vehicles.

Taxi drivers and small business owners have said the proposed charges from the CAZ could kill their business, and that the compensation scheme of £120 million would not be enough to help with the transition to new lower-emission vehicles.

Do you think the charges should be reduced, or the areas of the CAZ changed? Or do you feel that the financial help offered to support the transition to lower-emission vehicles needs to be greater? Tell us what you think in the comments section .
