Epictetus, a freed Roman slave who became one of the most quoted Stoic thinkers, built his entire teaching on one distinction: some things are in your control, and some are not. Your opinions, your impulses, your desires, yours. Everything else: not yours. He called this the dichotomy of control, and Western self-help has been repackaging it ever since.
