'What's he thinking?' - Ex-England star questions Callum Wilson decision for Jack Grealish assist

Former England international Carlton Cole admits he originally questioned Callum Wilson's decision to pass the ball to Jack Grealish rather than have a shot himself. The Newcastle United striker says he's hopeful that his unselfish play with see the favour repaid later in the tournament.

Wilson came off the bench to replace Harry Kane with 14 minutes of normal time remaining. The Toon striker enjoyed a solid enough cameo against Iran, with the game already wrapped up.

Gareth Southgate's Three Lions maintained the intensity, despite a flurry of changes, with Wilson grabbing the assist for England's sixth goal.

“I love what Callum Wilson did,” Cole told talkSPORT. However, co-host Andy Goldstein revealed what the former Hammers striker originally thought.

Goldstein replied: “That’s not what you said in there. You turned to Benty and screamed: ‘what was he thinking of?'”

“What I would have done in that situation, because I hadn’t started the game, as a striker, you’re at a World Cup, you want to get on the scoresheet," Cole said. "Put the ball in the back of the net. But this shows what Gareth Southgate is building. He’s building a team."
