The legend of Unakoti tells the story of Lord Shiva's journey to Kashi with one crore (ten million) deities. Before resting for the night, Shiva instructed everyone to wake before sunrise and continue the journey. According to the traditional legend, when the deities failed to wake in time, Shiva left alone, and the remaining divine beings were transformed into stone at sunrise. While this is a sacred legend preserved in local tradition, the remarkable rock carvings of Unakoti remain one of India's most intriguing heritage sites.
