What Narmada Valley Dinosaur Fossils Revealed About India's Prehistoric Past and Gondwana

The Femur That Started Everything

In 1828, William Henry Sleeman, better known for suppressing the Thuggee cult, pulled a massive fossilised femur from the banks of the Narmada near Jabalpur. He sent it to Calcutta, where it was eventually identified as belonging to a creature no living person had ever seen. That bone was the first dinosaur fossil formally recorded from India, and it came from a titanosaur: a long-necked, plant-eating sauropod that had walked across what is now Madhya Pradesh roughly 66 to 70 million years ago.
