Of all the recent developments within the modern game there remains a glaring absence: Transparency.
Technology will now confirm whether a ball has crossed a goal line and we have all become accustomed to lines being drawn across the pitch to measure an offside call. Referees now have access to a back-up team of supposed experts and every decision can be replayed from multiple angles for additional scrutiny.
When done correctly, none of these are necessarily bad things. They remain a blight on the matchday experience - with it rarely clear to those inside a stadium what is going on and whether checks are being made by VAR or not. But, ultimately, the fair and correct decisions that should follow benefit everyone.
