What Jesus did after Arsenal debut as Tierney sub is explained - Moments missed vs Nurnberg

Arsenal won their first game of their pre-season campaign 5-3 against Nurnberg. It looked as though it was heading towards a disastrous start for the Gunners when they found themselves 2-0 down at half time after a tepid performance.

Mikel Arteta then rang the changes though and it took Gabriel Jesus just 90 seconds to mark his Arsenal debut with a goal. The Brazilian was then heavily involved in two own goals by the home side after Mohamed Elneny had levelled the scores at the Max-Morlock Stadion with a long range belter.

There was time for Nurnberg to pull one back to set up a tense finish, but before too long Jesus was on hand again to pounce on Gabriel Martinelli's cross to restore the Gunners' two goal advantage. It was an exciting start to pre-season and here football.london takes a look back at some of the things you may have missed from the game.

Mari consoles Turner

It wasn't the best of afternoons for Pablo Mari. The Spaniard was making his first Arsenal appearance since a loan move to Udinese midway through last season, but struggled for much of the first half against the physicality of Nurnberg's Christoph Daferner, and despite being less exposed after a formation change in the second he still managed to pick up a yellow card for an agricultural challenge on the halfway line.

However, one of the things that Mikel Arteta admired about his compatriot is his leadership capabilities. During breaks in play Mari could be seen giving bits of advice to his young centre half partner Reuell Walters, and the 28-year-old also had some positive words for the new boys in the Arsenal side.

Matt Turner was making his first start since his move from New England Revolution earlier this summer and made some good early saves, but may have wanted to do better with Johannes Geis' long range effort that put Nurnberg 1-0 up. While others trudged back to the halfway line Mari was straight over to offer some words of encouragement to Turner, who bounced back to have an impressive rest of his game.

Tierney sub explained

One of the most exciting things about this week has been seeing Kieran Tierney back playing football again. The Scottish international missed the business end of the season yet again last time out after suffering a knee injury that required surgery.

He has made his comeback during Arsenal's pre-season training camp at Adidas HQ and was rewarded for his efforts in training with a start at the Max-Morlock Stadion. It didn't last long though as he was replaced after just 30 minutes by Cedric, prompting fears that he could be suffering from yet another injury.

However, the 25-year-old was pictured at half time doing warm down work with Arsenal's fitness coaches suggesting that the substitution may have been pre-planned. Arsenal are looking at bringing in cover for Tierney in the shape of Lisandro Martinez, but with his poor recent injury record they are keen not to rush him back too quickly this time around.

Jesus shows his class during and after the game

There's no doubting that the man of the match at the Max-Morlock Stadion was Gabriel Jesus. Arsenal's new signing got off to a fantastic start, netting twice and being heavily involved in two other goals.

He brought much needed intensity to the Gunners front line and combined perfectly with Eddie Nketiah at points during the second half. Unsurprisingly he was the man of the moment at full time and was mobbed by Nurnberg players and ball boys alike asking for a selfie.

Rather than trudging straight down the tunnel as he may have wanted to after playing his first football in a few weeks, the 25-year-old was more than happy to pose for pictures. His connection with the travelling Arsenal support already looks strong too, and it's safe to say the future looks bright for the Brazilian striker.
