The Wimbledon’s men’s semi-finals are almost upon us (Friday, July 12), with defending champion Carlos Alcaraz set to go head to head against Daniil Medvedev on Centre Court, looking to become the first to book his place in Sunday’s final.
Novak Djokovic, meanwhile, was handed a place in the final four after Alex de Minaur pulled out of their quarter-final due to injury.
The seven-time men’s champion will play Lorenzo Musetti today, who overcame Taylor Fritz in five sets on Thursday.
Djokovic recently sat down for an interview with the BBC after beating Holger Rune. Djokovic had taken exception to the crowd chanting Rune’s name.
He said; "Well, to all the fans that had respect and stayed here tonight thank you very much from the bottom of my heart, I appreciate it."And to all those people that have chosen to disrespect the player, in this case me, have a gooooood night. Gooood night, gooood night. Very good night."
In the BBC interview, Djokovic is asked how he feels about the crowd after having some time to reflect on what happened.
"Same," he replied. The reporter then asked if he feels he gets the respect he deserves at Wimbledon, with Djokovic responding: "Look, as I said in the post-match interview, I thanked all of the people.
"Most of the people in the stadium tonight were respectful and I thank them and I know that, after watching tennis all day, it's not easy to stay. So, I was thankful. I don't take it for granted.”
As the highest-earning tennis player in history, Djokovic is hardly short of money but, if he successfully defends his title at Wimbledon, he will find himself £2.7m richer.
The Serbian is a multimillionaire already just from his on court exploits, having racked up 23 grand slam victories – seven of them at Wimbledon, including the last four championships.
If you also factor in his endorsement deals, he is a very wealthy athlete indeed and looks set to add to his trophy cabinet and bank account.
But what is Djokovic’s net worth and how did he make his millions?
What prize money is on offer at Wimbledon?
In 2023, the tournament winner took home £2.35m in prize money.
This year, the 2024 singles draw winners (male and female) will each get a £2.7m payout, reflecting a nearly 15 per cent bump in pay from 2023.
"With this year's championships only days away, I am delighted to announce a record prize money fund of £50m, with increases for players in every round and across every event," Deborah Jevans, chair of the All England Club, the host of Wimbledon, has said in a statement about the increase.
Here is the breakdown for the 2024 Wimbledon singles prize money for the final stages:
- Winners: £2.7m
- Runners-up: £1.4m
- Semi-finalists: £715,000
- Quarter-finalists: £375,000
