Known by its popular name, Down Syndrome, Trisomy 21 is a genetic disorder that results in a recognizable and identifiable facial appearance in those who are affected. It is a genetic disorder that occurs due to a specific anomaly: an additional copy of chromosome 21 (i.e., on top of the 23 pairs of chromosomes that humans have) that may be partial or complete. It is a fairly common condition across the world, affecting the physical traits, learning abilities, developmental aspects and overall health of those suffering from it. Its prevalence varies by population and risk of a baby acquiring it increases with the increase maternal age.
