What England need to qualify for World Cup 2022 last 16 tonight

England tonight head into their final World Cup group game against Wales without their knockout stage spot secured.

A frustrating - and slightly concerning - 0-0 draw with the United States means Group B is all to play for heading into tonight’s double-header. Even bottom side Wales can reach the last-16 stage.

England are currently top of the group on four points, followed by Iran in second on three points. USA are third on two points and Wales prop up the group on one point.

So, what do England need against Wales? We lay it all out.

England beat Wales

It’s as simple as this: beat Wales and England will qualify for the last-16 stage and as group winners, handing them - in theory - an easier opponent. The result of Iran vs USA will not matter.

England draw with Wales

One point will be enough to qualify no matter how Iran get on against the USA. However, if Iran beat USA and England draw, then the Three Lions will finish second in the group.

England lose to Wales

England have to lose to Wales by four clear goals and see Iran beat USA to be sent home early from the World Cup. If England lose by less than four goals, and Iran beat USA, then England would still finish second in the group.
