There has been widespread discussion about non-dom status after it was confirmed Akshata Murty, the wife of chancellor Rishi Sunak, qualifies for it. It's a rule that ultimately comes of great benefit to the very rich, as it enables those who claim it to avoid paying huge sums to HMRC.
In fact research carried out by the London School of Economics and the University of Warwick discovered that more than two-fifths of people who earned £5m or more in 2018 have at some time claimed the status since 1997 at least. According to the report, 22% of top-earning bankers have also taken advantage of the scheme, and some of the most famous people said to have claimed non-dom status include Roman Abramovich, the Russian owner of Chelsea football club and owner of the Daily Mail, Lord Rothermere.
Other notable names reported to have taken advantage of the scheme include former deputy chairman of the Conservative party, Lord Ashcroft, and the former HSBC boss Stuart Gulliver.
