France has extended curfews and tightened security after days of protests turned violent across several cities, with more demonstrations expected on October 24. More than 2,500 people had been taken into police custody by Monday evening, while clashes, looting and arson damaged shops and public buildings.
The protests, which began in September over concerns about public education, have expanded into demonstrations against rising living costs and public services.
