What cast of Glasgow comedy City Lights are up to now - from soaps to stardom

There have been many a comedy classic show to come from the streets of Glasgow, but there was one 1984 classic that began it all for Scottish comedians.

Running from 1984 to 1991, City Lights stared the iconic Gerard Kelly in his first major role as clueless bank clerk Willie Melvin, who aims for the stars in his dream job as a successful writer as he tries to get his autobiography 'My Childhood Up A Close' published.

Surrounded by the eccentric and sometimes dodgy pals, his dream seems far off as hapless pals Chancer, Tam, Irene and Brian continue to make his dream harder to reach with their antics.

The show was hugely popular across Scotland and seemed to strike a chord especially with Glaswegians, awash as it was with typical Glasgow humour and patter - most of which came out the mouth of Willie's mother as she routinely 'burst his baw' so to speak.

So what became of the stars of City Lights? Find out more below:

After his starring role in City Lights, Gerard went from strength to strength in the television business and ended up starring in some comedy shows, and more serious roles in soaps.

Gerard had roles in Rab C Nesbitt, Scotch and Wry and Extras, as well as more serious roles in the likes of Eastenders where he played the villainous Jimmy.

He also played PC David Gallagher in Juliet Bravo and evil Callum Finnegan in Brookside.

Gerard sadly passed away of a brain aneurysm on October 28 2010, and on New Years Eve of the same year, BBC One Scotland organised an hour long tribute to the actor, titled 'Gerard Kelly: A Celebration'.

Andy Gray - Chancer

Known as the constant 'bee in Willie's bonnet', Andy Gray was aptly named Chancer as he often chanced his luck on the programme.

Continuing on from this, Andy became quite the face in Scottish soaps, and has also been described as "a stalwart of Scottish Theatre" for his work in plays and pantomines.

He was most well known for his role as Pete Galloway on River City, and was 'one of the most popular faces to pass through Shieldinch'.

Sadly, Andy passed away in hospital as a result of complications caused by coronavirus on January 18 2021.

River City held a tribute to the star in a later episode, as they proceeded to state his character had also died, as real-life pal Grant Stott lead the tributes, despite never having interacted on the show.

Dave Anderson - Adam McLelland

Bank manager and nemesis to Willie, Dave may have played the villain in City Lights, but he became a loved television and playwright in Scotland.

Most known for playing Gregory's father in Gregory's Girl, his other appearances include roles in Taggart, Still Game, Soldier, Soldier and Rockface.

n the course of his theatre career, he was a member of the politically minded 7:84 group and a founder of the Wildcat Stage Productions company along with David MacLennan, and wrote the music and lyrics for Tony Roper's play The Steamie.

His most recent role came in 2016 as John in the short film Bells, directed by Gregor Barclay.

Jonathan Watson - Brian

Jonathan followed the trend of appearing on City Lights, to then appearing in Rab C Nesbitt, but created his own comedy sketch show parodying Scottish football.

Only An Excuse? became a star hit in Scotland, as the footballing world of our wee nation can be quite the comedic antidote to real world issues, and Jonathan was at the centre of this.

Early television appearances included minor parts in The Bill and Casualty. In Bob Servant which sees him playing opposite Brian Cox, as Bob's trusty sidekick - Frank.

Most recently, Jonathan has appeared in Doctor Who - Flux as Sontarans Commander Riskaw and Skaak.

Billy Connolly - Cameo

Scotland's comedy giant Billy Connolly guest starred in one episode of City Lights - anybody got a clue how he got on in television?

The Big Yin recently announced his sad retirement from live comedy shows and appearance, due to the continuing severity of his Parkinson's Disease, which he was diagnosed with in 2013.
