What Borussia Dortmund result means for Graham Potter as Chelsea manager amid sacking calls

"It’s always nice to win, that’s for sure. Everyone is happier when we do," Chelsea boss Graham Potter told reporters ahead of a huge clash with Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday. The former Brighton man knows it's those victories that will quiet the noise surrounding doubts over his future at Stamford Bridge.

The pressure mounted on Potter came after a difficult run of form for the side since the turn of the new year, registering just a few wins since the end of the World Cup. Victory over Leeds has given some temporary relief, but the big challenge is to follow that up with a string of results.

With the Blues 10th in the Premier League and 11 points off of the top four, Champions League qualification looks a long shot. Their best chance may come in the competition itself if they were to win it, which isn't an impossibility for a side that have managed it before.

That may be some wishful thinking for those of a Chelsea persuasion, but it's an energy Potter may have to harness in his biggest game at the club so far. His side are 1-0 down to Borussia Dortmund in the Round of 16 after the first leg, with the second leg providing a huge moment for the manager.

The question is whether defeat would spell disaster for the new management staff or not as the Telegraph reported last week that both Leeds and Borussia Dortmund were seen as "make or break". The report claimed that failing to win either could force a decision from the board, who have otherwise stuck by their appointment.

Both Todd Boehly and Behdad Eghbali are set to be in attendance for the game, with a decision to make on the next steps if they were to crash out of Europe. The Athletic claim that if there were to be a managerial change then both co-owners would have to be behind the switch.

It remains to be seen if that will be the case after the Guardian reported a different claim in that the Leeds and Dortmund clash won't impact a decision to stand by Potter. Either way, the noise is far from an easy thing for the squad and new manager to deal with as they get settled.

But quite simply put, Potter has to win games to keep things ticking along and they don't get much bigger than the Champions League knockouts.
