The latest Marvel film has been released in the UK and sees actor/musician Jared Leto (Lord of War, Dallas Buyers Club) step into the role of the franchise's most iconic anti-hero. The film was directed by Daniel Espinosa and also stars Tyrese Gibson, Jared Harris, Adria Arjona, Matt Smith and Al Madriga.
The movie's plot sees biochemist Michael Morbius (Leto) attempt to cure himself of a rare blood disease with an experimental treatment that goes disastrously wrong. Instead, he is left with a form of vampirism that sees unimaginable darkness unleashed within him.
The film's release was delayed several times due to the Covid-19 pandemic after filming was completed in 2019. However, Morbius was released in cinemas around the UK today (March 31, 2022) and is due out in the USA tomorrow (April 1, 2022).

What are the Morbius reviews saying?
Unfortunately, the early reviews for Morbius have been, at best, mixed - and that's being very, very charitable.
Kevin Maher at The Times was particularly scathing. Giving the film just one star, he described it as "the cinematic equivalent of Murphy's Law" and an "appalling superhero snooze-fest." Maher then went on to state: "It's a movie without dramatic jeopardy, originality, narrative coherence, compelling characters or a single even vaguely human performance."
The Independent 's review begins with Clarisse Loughrey preparing to quit the film halfway through. However, she eventually gave it two stars despite calling it "too flavourless to even be the wild, untethered disaster some were secretly hoping for."
Some of the reviews praise the acting in the film, including Leto's performance, with Leah Greenblatt of Entertainment Weekly giving the film a B grade, saying that Leto "hits the right notes of fear and longing in a surprisingly restrained performance" though also saying of the film, "Logic and plot flow are generally treated like civilian casualties."
Time Magazine also have a couple of kind words for Leto's performance, describing it as "quietly vibrating vulnerability." However, they also go on to describe the film as "a movie that feels like one big windup for something else, even if we walk out feeling we've already seen plenty."
Special mention has to be made of David Fear's review in Rolling Stone, which said: "Is Morbius the worst Marvel movie ever made? In an alternate universe without The New Mutants, the answer would likely be yes."
He goes on to say: "There will not be blood — or much fun, excitement or coherence — in this 'Spider-Man' supervillain spin-off starring Jared Leto as a scientist-turned-vampire."
At the time of writing, the film currently has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 21% and an IMDB rating of 4.8/10.
