What is a heat pump and how does it work?

Government grants, along with the suspension of VAT on their purchase, mean heat pumps are more affordable than ever - (Getty/iStock)

Heat pumps are becoming an increasingly familiar alternative to gas and oil boilers, offering a more energy-efficient way to heat a home without burning fossil fuels. Rather than generating heat themselves, they use electricity to capture heat already present in the air, ground or water and transfer it into your home.

This makes them remarkably efficient. A well-designed heat pump can typically produce around three units of heat for every unit of electricity it consumes, while government grants can now cover a significant proportion of the upfront installation cost. In England and Wales, eligible households can currently receive as much as £9,000 towards some heat pump installations.
