West Lothian 'high-flyer' teacher had sex with teen pupil in woods and school

A teacher described as a “dedicated professional” had sex with a teen pupil in woods and his own school, a court heard.

Jacqueline Millar, who previously taught religious education, had a sexual relationship with the schoolboy over six months.

The 36-year-old taught at the high school in the Lothians which the youngster attended.

As the Record reports, the court heard Millar told the youngster she wanted to go on the pill so they could start having sex.

Two weeks after they kissed in a car, the court heard the pair drove to a wooded area where Millar undressed and they had sex for the first time.

They also had sex in the school, the court was told, after “papering” over a door window.

Millar appeared at Edinburgh Sheriff Court on Friday and admitted engaging in sexual activity with a person under 18 while she was in a capacity as a teacher.

She pled guilty to kissing him, cuddling him, uttering sexual remarks towards him, sending social media messages and texts of a sexual nature, and repeatedly having sexual intercourse with him.

Fiscal depute Susan Dickson said Millar taught religious, moral and philosophical studies when she started at the school in 2017 before taking on new roles.

Ms Dickson said colleagues described Millar as “competent, knowledgeable, dedicated, professional” in her work.

The court was told Millar and the teenage pupil began spending time together.

Ms Dickson said the pair went out for a walk in August 2021, adding: “Ms Millar said to (the pupil) that she wanted to go on the pill in order to be able to have sex with him.”

A week later, Miller and the boy kissed in her car, although the prosecutor said there was “dispute” about who initiated it.

The teen later described it to cops as a “snog” which the teacher initiated, while Millar said it was the pupil.

The court was told Millar and the boy went to a wooded area in the Lothians around the end of August 2021.

Ms Dickson said “Ms Millar removed her clothing and pulled (the pupil’s) trousers down” and they had sex.

The prosecutor said the pair entered a relationship where they were “having sex on a regular basis”.

Ms Dickson said they had sex in the school after “papering over the window of a school door” and were in contact over various messaging services.

The relationship continued while the teen was a pupil at the school and after he left education.

She told the court the relationship came to an “abrupt halt” last March after a 999 call brought police to Millar’s West Lothian home.

The court heard Millar and the teen had a row and the teacher called 999 to say she was being attacked.

The boy was questioned by police and told officers about what had gone on with the teacher.

Advocate Sarah Livingstone, acting for Millar, said her client was pleading guilty to the charge but disputed aspects of the case against her.

Ms Livingstone said Millar denied telling the boy she wanted to take contraception.

Millar also maintained the first time she had sex with the teen was in her car, not in the woods, and disputed having sex in the school.

Ms Livingstone said Millar wasn’t trying to “minimise the severity” of her offending.

Millar was “something of a high-flyer” who was held in “high esteem” by colleagues and had an “unblemished record”, Ms Livingstone added, but she’d now “lost everything”.

The court was told Millar resigned from her job on the day she was charged.

Millar, of Livingston, West Lothian, admitted carrying out the offences between August 2021 and early 2022.

Sheriff Derek O’Carroll deferred sentence on Millar until next month for reports.
