East Whitburn’s Chris White helped Great Britain’s handball team progress from their European Championship qualifying group.
The Brits topped the EHF 2026 Euro Qualifying Phase One table thanks largely to a brilliant late fightback to draw 25-25 in their opening clash with Cyprus.
White (24) scored four goals in that clash then followed it up with a team-leading 11 goals in a 39-22 victory over host nation Azerbaijan in their next contest.
Despite that victory, they entered their final match against Malta needing a win and a significant swing in goal difference to progress –
and that’s exactly what happened.
GB defeated Malta 44-14, with White tallying four goals while Cyprus were only able to win by nine goals in their match against Azerbaijan.
That ensured that GB reached the Promotion Round.
