West Bengal: 5 held for firing at realtors in Habra

KOLKATA: In yet another daring shootout in North 24 Parganas, a real estate developer and his manager were shot at by a gang in Habra late on Wednesday night.

Raju Ghosh, the promoter, and his associate Shantanu Roy have been admitted to a private hospital off EM Bypass. Their condition was stated to be critical. Police have arrested five persons.

The shooting comes barely a couple of days after a gang showered bullets at a popular biryani outlet in Barrackpore, leaving two injured.

On Wednesday, the duo was targeted in front of their office at ward 10 around 11.45pm. “ At least eight gun-toting goons fired indiscriminately before fleeing the spot. They also hurled bombs at the promoter’ s office,” a local trader said. While Ghosh was struck by a bullet in his back, Roy was hit by a bullet in his left hand. Many suspect a bitter syndicate rivalry with another gang — led by two local criminals Minta and Bocha — had led to the shooting. Both have been named in the FIR. Police on Thursday arrested five persons — Sanjoy Mondal, Santu Saha, Laxman Saha, Kala Sarkar and Debasis Dey. "Five people have been arrested and produced in court," said Barasat SP Rajnarayan Mukherje.
