Welsh road sign spotted being used in Coventry

Drivers in Coventry spotted an unexpected bit of roadside furniture as they drove through their city after a Welsh road sign was placed to warn of a closed street.

A 'road ahead closed' sign was spotted on Sandy Lane in the English city but with the initial writing in Welsh – ffordd ymlaen ar gau – and the English translation written underneath.

It is not known at this point how or why the sign came to be used in Coventry. It was spotted by Philip Handy and shared with some puzzlement on social media. It prompted dozens of reactions. Philip told CoventryLive : "I thought I would send a picture to my daughter-in-law as she is Welsh and lives in north Wales. I think it's probably a sign that was picked up years back when workers were working in Wales. It could have been kicking round in store and used by mistake."

As a city strongly linked with migratory workers Coventry is a place lots of Welsh people have settled through the years. There has been an active group, Coventry Cambrian Society, which has been meeting weekly for the last 50years. There is also the Welsh Presbyterian Church in Holyhead Road and Coventry Welsh Rugby Club in Burbages Lane.

Rita Mitchell, chair of the Coventry Cambrian Society, said: "It's a mystery. I can't imagine how or why it has ended up in Coventry – maybe someone put it up as a joke? But there are lots of Welsh people in Coventry so if any of them saw it while driving around I am sure it would have raised a smile."

Coventry City Council has been approached for a comment. They have yet to reply in either English or Welsh.
