Welsh road 'completely blocked' by massive landslide

Dramatic images show a Snowdonia road smothered by a landslide after strong wind and rain hit north Wales. The A498 has been shut in both directions since around 4.30pm today (Friday, September 30) between the Pen-y-Gwryd Hotel (A4086) and the Prince Llewelyn Hotel in Beddgelert (A4085).

The pictures, taken by a local resident and shared on social media, show large rocks. mud, and floodwater obstructing the road. North Wales Police said officers have been sent to the road and have urged people to avoid the area in the meantime, reports the Daily Post.

In a statement, North Wales Police said: "Please be aware that the A498 between the Penygwryd Hotel and Beddgelert is currently closed due to a landslide. The road is completely blocked and officers are on their way.

"Diversions will be put in place once our colleagues from Highways arrive so please avoid the area." The large landslide comes after gale-force winds and heavy rain were forecast for north Wales.

The inclement weather - including gusts nearing 50mph - has hit Wales today as the fallout from Hurricane Ian in the USA moves across the Atlantic. A yellow weather warning for wind and rain have been in place for the north of the UK for most of today.

No warnings have been issued for Wales but it has still been a very wet and windy day across the region according to the Met Office. The adverse weather conditions are primarily hitting the north-west coast of the country. However, heavy rainfall — up to 16mm per hour — is being seen across the whole country.
