8000 Welsh independence supporters march through Aberystwyth – see the best pictures

AROUND 8000 people have marched through the streets during a Welsh Independence march in Aberystwyth.

The march has been organised by the grassroots Welsh independence campaign YesCymru, with First Minister of Wales and Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth among the speakers at the event, along with other pro-independence leaders.

Ap Iorwerth's government has said in its legislative agenda that it will formally request from the UK the right to determine the timescale, question, and process for an independence referendum.

Speaking to the crowd, he said: “Quite simply, we believe in our potential as an independent nation, and we recognise that bringing Wales with us is key."

Ap Iorwerth went on: "We are on a journey and there’s no turning back. The next step must be equality with Scotland as a minimum.

"We are standing up for Wales, pursuing the investment and greater powers we need from Westminster now, so we can make a real difference to people’s lives as the next step in our constitutional journey."

It is the 11th time since 2019 that a march has been organised by pro-independence groups Yes Cymru and All Under One Banner Cymru.
