Welsh-filmed Disney+ show axed after just one series

Disney+ fantasy Willow has been axed after just one series. The show, which was a continuation of the 1988 film of the same name, was largely shot in and around Wales - read more about some of the locations used here.

The film and series is focused on Nelwyn sorcerer Willow Ufgood, played by Hollywood star Warwick Davis. The series, which aired over the autumn, saw Willow lead a party to rescue the twin brother of a princess.

News of Willow’s cancellation comes as Lucasfilm has been reassessing its film slate, taking time to identify the next movie in the Star Wars franchise. In recent years, the company has been committed to making numerous Star Wars television shows including The Mandalorian, Ahsoka, Acolyte and Skeleton Crew.

Willow’s axing comes amid increased scrutiny at the media companies, including Disney, which have been curbing streaming content spending in search of profitability. While the series won’t continue, Willow remains an important part of the Lucasfilm library, so it might be revisited in the future.

The eight-part series introduced new characters and was set in a world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls and other mystical creatures flourish. Ellie Bamber, Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Amer Chadha-Patel and Tony Revolori starred alongside Warwick Davis.

Jonathan Kasdan wrote the pilot and served as co-showrunner alongside Wendy Mericle; Howard and writer Bob Dolman. Kathleen Kennedy and Michelle Rejwan also served as executive producers. Are you sad about Willow’s cancellation? Let us know in the comments.
