A diamond couple who are well-known Dumbarton stalwarts have toasted their 60th wedding anniversary.
Harvie Wilson, 86, and Margo Wilson, 83, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Wednesday, August 10, after meeting in the Albert Ballroom in Glasgow, with the pair getting married a few years later at Carnwadric Church.
The couple, both church elders at Riverside Parish Church, have been long-standing members of the local community.
Harvie is arguably the longest serving member of the Vale of Leven Golf Club, having been there since 1958, while Margo taught many locals as a primary teacher at Knoxland Primary School for over 30 years, before retiring in 1997.
Discussing how they plan to celebrate their big day, Margo said: “We originally wanted to keep it lowkey because for our golden wedding anniversary we had a big party.
“In your mind, you don’t think you’re in your 80s, you think you’re 40 years younger until you try to move!
Harvie added: “We have been lucky health-wise, Margo has recently had a hip replacement and had breast cancer 20 years ago, but we are still here.“
The avid golfer spoke on what it has been like being married and raising a family in Dumbarton, saying: “The difference now is that you don’t see the familiar faces. Every year there are less and less.
“When you walk along the high street, you no longer see as many people that you have known for 20-plus years.
“Saying that, we were walking down the River Leven not long ago, and suddenly this chap pulling in a boat stopped and said ‘hello’. He was 63 years old.
“A 63-year-old man was then having a conversation with his primary school teacher, that is quite remarkable. They spoke about himself and his sons who Margo taught.
The couple have both continued to partake in sports and community activities well into their 80s, from Harvie’s golfing to Margo singing with several choirs over the years, including the church choir, Dalvait Singers and Helensburgh Dorian Choir.
Their proud son, Keith Wilson, sees his parents as an inspiration, adding: “My mum is known about the area from people my age and older as Mrs Wilson because of how many people she has taught here, and how well thought of in the community she is.
“My brother Craig and I find them an inspiration, even despite how far-fetched my dad’s jokes can be sometimes!”
