Wednesday's Jenna Ortega has received backlash for 'knowingly exposing hundreds of cast and crew to Covid' to film her iconic dance scene.
The 20-year-old actress has been slammed by fans after describing how she pushed through the scene while she had 'body aches' before she received a positive coronavirus test.
Jenna's admission has raised questions about how closely protocols were followed on the set of the Netflix show which was filmed during the pandemic between September 2021 and March 2022, in Romania.
The controversy came after Jenna spoke out about working through her illness in a recent interview.
The star said she did the dance scene on the "first day with COVID so it was awful to film".
"I woke up and – it’s weird, I never get sick and when I do it’s not very bad – I had the body aches," she recalled.
"I felt like I’d been hit by a car and that a little goblin had been let loose in my throat and was scratching the walls of my esophagus.
"They were giving me medicine between takes because we were waiting on the positive result," she told NME.
Once Jenna’s test came back positive, MGM, the production company behind Wednesday , said that "strict protocols were followed" and "once the positive test was confirmed production removed Jenna from set".
When she had got better, Jenna wanted to redo the scene saying she "probably could have done it a bit better", but due to filming schedules there wasn't enough time.
Jenna got the song, Goo Goo Muck by The Cramps a week ahead of the scene which she choreographed herself.
Despite the dance going viral, some have hit back saying Jenna should not have been working when she was unwell.
One said: "Why the f*** she didn't get sent home if she felt like she had been 'hit by a car' and 'a little goblin had been let loose in' her throat."
As another wrote: "Filming that dance scene while she had COVID is not impressive."
With a third saying: "'It was dangerous, unethical, and extremely selfish thing to do, both on her part, and on the part of the directors and producers. There's absolutely no positive way to spin an actress knowingly exposing hundreds of cast members and crew to COVID."
Others wondered if any more cast and crew members caught coronavirus as a result of Jenna working.
One person pointed out: "Jenna Ortega having COVID on set and working unmasked around other unmasked performers is not a flex. She should not be praised for working while sick. The above the line crew could’ve possibly disabled or killed someone for their irresponsibility."
Mirror Online has contacted Netflix and Jenna for comment.
