New Delhi: Heavy rains lashed areas of Delhi NCR on Monday bringing the mercury down about 5 notches below the season's average.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain and gusty winds occurred over many places in Delhi.

Thunderstorms with light to moderate intensity rain is also expected over Haryana's Karnal, Safidon, Panipat, and Uttar Pradesh's Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Bijnaur, Hastinapur, Chandpur, Meerut, Moradabad, Hapur, Sambhal, Billari, Chandausi, Jahangirabad, and Anupshahar in the next few hours.

Further, rainfall is forecast in practically all states during the next four days. It has been raining in most regions of the country for the previous two days, according to the report.

The main reason for the unseasonal downpour is "Western Disturbance", Dr Naresh Kumar, Senior Scientist at IMD.

A warning of heavy rainfall has been issued in the Western Himalayan region, meaning more than 6.5 cm of rainfall, he added. (with Agency inputs)
