In the current cost of living crisis many people have found themselves shopping around to find bargains and save every penny they can. We went to Heron Foods in Clifton, with a fiver to buy food essentials and to see if it's similar to other supermarkets.
Walking into the store, it was pretty empty, I grabbed a basket and ventured around looking for everyday food essentials. Firstly I grabbed a loaf of bread, Warburtons Toastie Sliced Bread, 400g, which was £1. However, to my disappointment I could have saved as much as 10p at supermarket giant Asda where the item costs 90p, and at Tesco where it costs 95p.
Still on the first aisle, I then turned around to have a browse at the canned goods. With a few options of different soups, I decided to pick up some tomato soup for 59p. They tend to have a long-lasting expiration date, which is very useful. But at Tescos, you can buy their own brand for as cheap as 55p. A few pence can make a difference for many.

I carried on the hunt for my food essentials, still keeping in mind my budget is a fiver. I thought I’d grab some milk and tea bags. As a tea lover they are a must for my basket. For a pint of milk, it was 89p, to my surprise this was 4p more expensive than other major supermarkets. You can find 1 pint of semi-skimmed milk for 85p at stores such as Asda, Tesco, Lidl and Aldi.
Not usually my go to brand for tea bags, but I still had my mind on keeping my shop as cheap as possible, I grabbed some Typhoo tea bags, which had 100 in the packet for £1.
Also in my basket, was a box of six eggs for 89p, which I thought was a pretty good price. In stores like Tescos, you can find a box of medium six eggs for £1.10, so compared to that you could be saving quite a bit. And lastly, I got some Maryland chocolate chip cookies for 59p. All together my shop was just under a fiver and totalled up to £4.96.
