One of the cheapest Wetherspoons pubs in the UK has been named as the Three John Scotts in Hull - and we sent one reporter to try it out.
To give you an idea of its prices, a pint of Guinness costs just £2.75.
There are also three different pints are available on tap for a mere £1.49, including Budlight and Greene King Ruddles Best.
The pub’s affordable prices were recently compared to Wetherspoons branches by The Sun.
Reporter Ivan Morris Poxton from HullLive reviewed the Three John Scotts Spoons to see how it fares in comparison to others.
Here is how he got on.
The British Beer & Pub Association (BBPA) found that the average cost of a pint is £4.07 in the UK, but in the capital you can expect to pay £4.84.
However, finder.com estimated that the average London pint price is as high as £5.50.
Ivan said: "Joined by a couple of companions, I enjoyed a late afternoon and early evening in this well-known Hull pub. I think to sum up what makes the pub an attractive venue to a varied clientele, the phrase 'cheap and cheerful' fits perfectly.
"No-one goes to a Wetherspoons for a sophisticated night out, they go for its affordability and to avoid expected aspects of most bars these days, a speaker system and sports screens. That is the cheap aspect.
"As for the cheerful, The Three John Scotts is notably less dingy than most other Wetherspoons I have been to, the light spreading through the interior and a large, spacious exterior to enjoy the sunlight."
Decor
Ivan continued: "Opened over 20 years ago, The Three John Scotts has not had much of a makeover inside since then. It has the traditional Wetherspoons aesthetic of patterned carpet, high standing wooden chairs and the more hospitable for groups corner booths. So far so mundane.
"The table layout and windows do allow extensive light to filter through though, and dotted around different parts of the pub are colourful information boards about Hull's history and the location itself on the corner of Lowgate and Alfred Gelder Street.
"A board highlights Hull's pivotal role at the start of the English Civil War, when Charles I was refused access to the city at Beverley Gate and a second details how the building used to be Hull's General Post Office and this was sited on no less than the remains of a royal palace, Suffolk Palace, that Henry VIII owned and stayed in.
" A third board answers the question that doubtless puzzles any newcomer to Hull, the origins of the pub's name.
"In case unaware, The Three John Scotts is a tribute to the three generations of John Scotts that were vicars of the just across the road St Mary's Church from 1816 to 1883."
Food and drink
Ivan added: "Food-wise, I did not think too much of the menu. The options and prices seemed to all largely tie in with my previous experiences of Wetherspoons grub. I opted with my companions to share a spicy meat feast with alcoholic drink for £10.50.
"The pizza was edible enough and the crust was not painfully thin, as can be an issue in some eatery chains. It did get lukewarm quite quickly though and no way did it merit three chilli peppers for spiciness - it barely deserved one.
"The alcoholic drinks available at The Three John Scotts are plentiful in variety and extraordinarily cheap. Ciders, Guinness and lagers are all available on tap but you can also opt for more than 20 different cocktails, including Raspberry Mojito, Tropical Daiquiri and Long Island Iced Tea.
"Three different pints are available on tap for a mere £1.49, including Budlight and Greene King's Ruddles Best. At the other end of the scale, Premium Belgian pale ale Leffe Blonde at 6.6 per cent ABV was the most expensive pint at just £3.85."
Atmosphere
Ivan said: "The pub was fairly empty inside, with the majority of customers choosing the outdoor benches at the back to sit at.
The clientele that were visiting on the evening I went this week were all adults but quite varied in age and gender - a far cry from the male-dominated experiences I have had at other Spoons.
"The Three John Scotts tends to see a mixture of college students, nearby dwellers, visitors and workers at Hull's nearby law courts, and groups spending an evening out in the city centre.
"The Three John Scotts offers a pleasant, fairly roomy venue to enjoy remarkably cheap drinks in a central Hull location, so it's easy to see why it's a favourite for many."
