There aren't many people who'd turn down a piece of chocolate cake are there, well not in my family anyway.
So when given the task of taste testing the dessert from each of the main supermarkets, a gathering for my nephew's birthday - he's biggest cake fan of us all - seemed the ideal place to do it.
He thought all his birthdays had come at once when Auntie Emma arrived with offerings from Asda, Morrisons, Sainsbury's, Tesco, Aldi and Lidl.

But how do they compare?
Appearance
From chocolate fudge cake to finest chocolate cake, they may have different names, but effectively it's the same thing.
They all have a Belgian chocolate buttercream top, but the most obvious difference is the decoration.
The majority are adorned with white and milk chocolate curls, Morrisons and Aldi getting brownie points for the most, yet these are absent from the Lidl and Sainsbury's cakes - making them a little less appealing for the true chocoholics.
They all have a chocolate buttercream filling though, which adds to the taste and stops any of them seeming too dry.
Size
As with our previous carrot cake taste test, you wouldn't notice any difference from looking at them. Each one says serve six and they do, but you're not getting a particularly big slice.
There is a slight weight difference, ranging from around 380g to little over 400g, but it's not really noticeable.
Texture and taste
It's a tricky task tasting all that chocolate cake in one sitting, but between 13 of us we managed it - cutting off a small slice of each one to compare.
We started off with the budget brands of Aldi and Lidl, thinking perhaps the quality and taste would improve as we made our way onto the main supermarket offerings.
Yet it turned out that when it comes to chocolate cake, the well known proverb 'you get what you pay for' simply doesn't apply.
Asda's was generally a bit tasteless, Tesco's a bit on the dry side with little fondness for its chocolate and Sainsbury's, well, a nice sponge - and in fact the birthday boy's favourite - but most of us felt it suffered from the lack of added decoration and subsequent flavour.
Morrisons' was a little too moist with what seemed like an alcohol aftertaste and while Lidl's was preferred by one of us, the majority felt its lighter sponge was just a bit too bland.
So you've probably guessed by now that it was Aldi that was the clear winner - with 11 of us all picking it as our standout favourite. Who knew a family could be in such agreement?
None of us are Mary Berry here, but we do like cake and have eaten copious amounts between us over the years, so I'd like to think our opinion counts for something.
Price
There are regular offers on these kind of products but usual prices are:
- Sainsbury's £3
- Tesco £2.90 (currently £2.15 Clubcard)
- Morrisons £2.75
- Asda £2.65 (current offer £2)
- Lidl £2.19
- Aldi £2.19
So Asda and Tesco currently have theirs on offer with various promotions, but the standard price of the winning cake from Aldi, £2.19, is the joint cheapest alongside Lidl. It seems that other well known proverb 'you can have your cake and eat it' does apply.
