Axe-throwing has become a very popular pastime of late and this is reflected in the fact that Edinburgh is now home to several top venues.
In the past few years, the phenomenon has become as well-liked as karaoke, 10-pin bowling and other fun hobbies you'll find in the capital with many people enjoying it not just as a one-off but also as a regular interest to pursue.
Edinburgh Live was invited along to Black Axe Throwing Co to throw axes, and, as you aren't allowed to drink alcohol on the premises (for obvious reasons) try out some of their exciting range of non-alcoholic drinks.

Located in the Broughton area on Beaverhall Road, Black Axe Throwing Co is easily accessible by public transport, with the venue housed in a big open-spaced warehouse that's ideal for slinging axes around in, and though cold at first, you quickly warm up as you move around and begin throwing.
We were greeted by the very enthusiastic and approachable employees of Black Axe Throwing, and they walked us through, not only how to fling the cleavers but also the health and safety tips and tricks that will keep you safe as you do so.
The axe-throwing specialists demonstrated how to throw the axe, the best way to hold it, where to stand and the best stance, as well as how to retrieve your axe from the target board, sand pit or anywhere else it may land once thrown.
They explained that there are three ways of throwing axes, we attempted all of them and if you listen to the instructors thoroughly enough, you may even land that all-important bullseye.
At first, we had a go at the one-handed axe throw. This was tricky, though a lot of fun. The problem was not so much throwing the axe, but accurately hitting the target.
We had some great fun attempting this throw and helped by listening to the feedback from the instructor, even landed some on the wooden target.
You are given a limited time on each throw and we spent around 20 minutes doing the one-handed throw. Until it was time to try the next one but after so much throwing we grew thirsty and were very eager to try out some of their tasty-looking alcohol-free drinks.
We tasted two different drinks, the Smashed Berry Cider and the Smashed Shandy, both of which were perfectly refreshing and ideal during a break from the thrill of throwing sharp bits of metal about.

The next throw we tried and were very successful at, was the two-handed, overhead throw.
At first, we were a little intimidated by this throw but it soon became our favourite. As we could unleash all of our frustrations through the axe which we managed to strike home and hit the board
Overall, axe throwing is an enjoyable experience and is not just a one-off, in fact, we can't wait to come back. It is fun, competitive and very safe as long as you listen to the guidance that is given to you.
People may be put off due to not being able to drink, but throwing axes is fun and adrenaline-filled enough without it.
At Edinburgh Live we will definitely be back at Black Axe Throwing Co to enjoy it and maybe even go along to let some frustration out.
