
Until recently, beans have had a solid reputation in Britain for being both a cheap, reliable staple and the lifeblood of vegans and hippies (as well as vegan hippies) who insist a bean burger tastes just like a beef burger, even though this is categorically untrue.
Apart from baked beans, beans are usually disguised as a health food or meat substitute — but these days are long gone.
