The cost of living is rapidly rising. Prices are going up at their fastest rate for 30 years.
Petrol costs are through the roof with the average price per litre on April 21 hitting 162.1p, according to confused.com. The ECHO decided to investigate how the price of a Freddo chocolate bar has increased with the cost of living.
The 18g bar has become a benchmark to measure inflation, with many seeing it as the most relatable way to see how much the price of food items have risen. The frog-shaped chocolates were initially 10p when they were relaunched by Cadbury back in the 1990s.

But since 2007, the treats have seen a series of price hikes – with each one causing widespread outrage. The average price of a Freddo in 2022 stands at 30p – a whopping 200% increase on the 1990s figure.
Freddos were few and far between as we hunted through Liverpool’s off-licences, supermarkets and sweet shops. Get Fredd-y to have your mind blown by Liverpool’s most pricey chocolate frogs.
5. Home Bargains - 85p for five (17p each)
If you’re looking for the best value Freddo in town, Home Bargains in Liverpool ONE is the place to go. It doesn’t sell individual Freddos but you can get a multipack of five for 85p – working out at 17p each.
4. B&M - £1 for five (20p each)
Up next for value for money is B&M, who are selling a five pack of Freddos for £1. This works out at 20p each – which is still, unfortunately, twice as much as prices in the 90s.
If you’re feeling Fred-venturous, B&M has also stocked up on ‘milky top’ (half white chocolate and half milk chocolate) and strawberry-flavoured Freddos. At £2.99 for a bag of 12, they work out at 25p each, so you’re paying an extra 5p for the experience.
3. Smith’s Cavern News, Snack&Bargain in Liverpool Central - 25p
Liverpool city centre’s off-licences boasted the cheapest price per individual Freddo – and also offered caramel Freddos.
2. Tesco and Sainsbury’s - 30p
Tesco Expresses and Sainsbury's Locals across the city sold Freddos for a standard price of 30p – earning them second place in the expensive Freddo hunt. Liverpool’s prices were higher than the retailers’ online options, at 26p for Tesco and 25p for Sainsbury’s.
But if your heart is set on a Freddo with your lunchtime meal deal, these probably aren’t the best places to look. A lot of the Tescos and Sainsbury’s shops in towns neglected to stock Freddos entirely, opting for 70p bars of Marvellous Creations instead.
1. WHSmith, South John Street - 49p
If you can believe it, the most expensive Freddo the ECHO found in Liverpool was 49p at WHSmith.
