Wayne Rooney in Arsenal U-turn as Man United legend names what 'everyone has been waiting for'

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney thinks Arsenal will end the season as Premier League champions as their title battle with Manchester City continues apace.

Arsenal answered City's 4-1 defeat of Liverpool in Saturday's early game with a win over Leeds United by the same score-line to keep the gap to Pep Guardiola's side in second at eight points. The Gunners have now won seven Premier League games in a row since a 3-1 loss to City at the Emirates Stadium on February 15, a result that could have been a catalyst for a revival for Guardiola's men.

However, they failed to gain ground on Arsenal because of a 1-1 draw with Nottingham Forest in the game after the win at the Emirates Stadium and because of the form of Arteta's side. Arsenal have nine games left to win a first Premier League title since 2004 and their next game is against Liverpool on Sunday (4:30pm).

After that they have to play West Ham United, Southampton, City, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Forest and Wolverhampton Wanderers. "The title race? Nothing would surprise me from Manchester City," Rooney wrote in his column for The Times.

"They could put together an incredible run and still win it but you have to say Arsenal are favourites. "Everyone has been waiting for them to drop off but they’ve been top of the league for so many weeks and dealing with the pressure all season.

"I don't see a collapse from them." Rooney has U-turned on an opinion on the title race he shared last month, telling CNN that he expected a City win but he personally wanted Arsenal to be successful.

"I hope Arsenal do win it but I think City will pip them to it," Rooney said. "It's going to be intriguing, I think because Arsenal have not been in this position for a long time, and it can be a lot of pressure to go with that."
