Waterford part ways with Ian Morris following poor run of results

TRIGGER happy Waterford are on the hunt for yet another manager after parting ways with Ian Morris.

The Blues are looking for their sixth boss in two years after Morris paid the price for back-to-back home defeats to Cork City and Galway United in recent days.

Waterford, who were relegated in the playoff last season, were the First Division leaders after four games.

But they have plummeted to fifth after four defeats in their last six games left them nine points off the top.

A Blues statement read: “Waterford FC can confirm as of today the club parted ways with Manager, Ian Morris.

“The club would like to thank Ian for all his hard work and wish him the best for the future.”

And chairman Mitch Cowling said: "I personally would like to thank Ian for all his hard work, he is a great guy and I've no doubt he will manage at the top level.

"We may have parted ways but Ian will always be welcomed at the RSC to cheer the Blues on.

"I'd like to wish Ian all the best in his career and I will be wishing for his success."

Assistant manager Gary Hunt and David Breen will take temporary charge for Friday’s league game away to Wexford.

Morris led Shelbourne to the First Division title last season but was let go before Damien Duff was named as his successor.

Waterford have changed managers at a rate of knots since Alan Reynolds left in the summer of 2020.

John Sheridan replaced him but only briefly as he quit for Wigan Athletic and Kevin Sheedy then only lasted until May of last season before Marc Bircham was installed.

But Bircham was controversially axed on the eve of the promotion-relegation playoff final which Waterford lost, with Ian Hendon at the helm that night.
