Watch: Huge fire rips through block of flats in east London

Harrowing footage reveals the moment a huge fire ripped through a tower block in east London in the early hours of Monday morning.

Forty fire engines and around 225 firefighters were called to the blaze in Freshwater Road, Dagenham just before 3am.

More than 100 people were evacuated from the building and two people have been taken to hospital.

Footage posted on social media shows a firefighter on a tall ladder attempting to extinguish the blaze with a water cannon.

Huge plumes of smoke are seen billowing from the top floor of the burning building.

A major search and rescue operation was underway on Monday following the incident and a rest centre has been set up at Beacontree Heath leisure centre.

Station Commander Alan Bendell, who is on scene, said: “The fire is producing heavy smoke and we’re advising local residents to keep windows and doors closed.

“Two of the Brigade’s 32-metre turntable ladders are being used at the scene as aerial water towers to assist with tackling the fire from height”.

People have been urged to avoid the area if possible.

Dinesh Raj, whose six-year-old daughter was having a sleepover with friends in the building when the fire broke out, told the BBC the children are "calm now", but were "terrified" initially.

Mr Raj said he received a call at around 3am from his friend, who was looking after his daughter, telling him there was a fire in the building.

The father told the BBC he rushed to the scene in his car and that his friend's family grabbed their six-month-old baby and his daughter and got out as soon as they smelled smoke.

The cause of the fire is unknown and will be investigated by the London Fire Brigade.

Campaigners have called for unsafe cladding to be removed from buildings since the Grenfell Tower fire killed 72 people in June 2017.
