Black man went to a Walmart in Oklahoma. Then a lady behind him asks for his green card: ‘she turned red’

A TikTok creator known as Voyce (voycebutler2) says a woman in a Walmart checkout line in Tulsa, Oklahoma, asked him if he had a green card. According to Voyce, the encounter happened as he stood in a regular checkout line rather than self-checkout.

He said he was “just minding my business” while the cashier scanned his items when a woman standing behind him leaned over and asked the question. Voyce shared the story on TikTok and received 486,300 views, more than 25,900 likes.

In the video, Voyce said the woman asked, “Excuse me, do you have a green card?” He said he turned around in disbelief and responded, “What?” He said she repeated the question, telling him, “Your green card. I just don’t see people like you around here much.” Voyce said he laughed at the comment and told her, “Ma’am, I’m from here, the United States. I was born here, and the only card I got is my debit card in my hand.”

He said the woman then replied, “Oh, I didn’t mean anything by it, you just talk so well.” Voyce said he responded by asking, “The hell they got to do with a green card?” before telling her, “Yeah, I’ve been practicing English since birth.”

A random lady asked me for my green card at Walmart in Tulsa… what is this world coming to? #fyp #storytime #tulsa #realstory #lady

According to Voyce, the cashier “froze” during the exchange, and he described the moment as one where “you can hear a pin drop.” Voyce said the woman then said, “Well, I was just asking.” He said he told her he was “just answering,” then added, “leave me alone, crazy-a– Karen.” Voyce claimed, “she turned red” and walked off to another register.

He said that as he left the store, he “shook” his head. On-screen text at the end of the video reads: “You never know who’s watching you or what they’ll say. Stay calm, stay smart, ignorance always exposes itself.” Such incidents highlight how racial bias can happen in everyday interactions, like when a bartender grabbed watermelon after a Black man told her to surprise her.

Several users responded to the video in the comments section. One person wrote, “I’m gonna start asking these white people for their green card or tribal card 🤣” Another commenter wrote, “You need to start asking them for their high school diploma.”

A different user commented, “Tulsa has quite a history.” Another commenter wrote, “She had NO business asking anyone for that. Let the ones that are in charge ask. Not her place!” Confrontations like this happened before too, like when a New Mexico woman alleged racism after a nail salon skipped her in line.
