One of the biggest questions marks entering the 2023 NFL season surrounded Washington Commanders quarterback Sam Howell.
Why would Washington head coach Ron Rivera, entering a make-or-break season under new ownership, roll the dice with a 2022 fifth-round pick with one NFL start on his resume?
Through five games this season, Howell has played well. Sure, he has been sacked 29 times — some of those due to him holding the football too long — and there was that four-interception game against Buffalo in Week 3. But that’s the process of going with a young quarterback. There are growing pains.
Despite some ups and downs, Howell is making a case to prove he should be Washington’s long-term answer at quarterback. His performance against the Eagles was one of the best from a Washington quarterback in years. The Commanders didn’t win, but not because of Howell.
Each week, Howell is showing glimpses of who he can be as an NFL quarterback by making multiple high-level throws as bodies surround him in the pocket.
