Kansas City Chiefs seventh-round draft pick Nic Jones started off rookie minicamp hot back in May. Now, he’s making his presence felt during mandatory minicamp practices.
With CBs Trent McDuffie and L’Jarius Sneed sidelined by injury, the rookie is seeing more and more opportunities with the first and second-team defense. Facing off against the starting offense during Day 1 of mandatory minicamp practices, Jones came down with an athletic interception on a misfire from Chiefs’ starting QB Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes double-clutched the pass and seemingly threw it behind TE Jody Fortson. The third-year tight end extended to try and make a play on the ball, but he ended up popping it right into Jones’ hands instead.
The crazy part is that this wasn’t Jones’ only play on the ball on the day. He had a few different pass breakups throughout the practice session, showing a knack for getting his hands on the football.
The cornerback room is fiercely competitive in Kansas City heading into the 2023 NFL season. Should Jones continue to make plays while the team deals with injuries during the offseason, he could see himself working his way up to the depth chart as well.
