The Washington Commanders addressed their quarterback position Wednesday, sending a package of draft picks, thought to be a pair of third-round picks to the Indianapolis Colts for Carson Wentz, per Adam Schefter of ESPN.

Wentz, 29, was the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft by the Philadelphia Eagles. Wentz spent five seasons in Philadelphia before struggling badly in 2020. After the season, the Eagles shipped Wentz to the Indianapolis Colts, where he’d reunite with his former offensive coordinator, Frank Reich.
The Eagles traded Wentz to the Colts for a third-round pick and a conditional second-round pick, which turned into a first-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft.
In his one season with the Colts, Wentz completed 62% of his passes for 3,563 yards with 27 touchdowns and seven interceptions. While the numbers look good on the surface, Wentz struggled down the stretch. Indianapolis GM Chris Ballard and Reich didn’t fully endorse Wentz’s return in 2022.
As for Washington, it now has its quarterback — for 2022 anyways. Washington will assume Wentz’s entire contract, which has three seasons remaining. The Commanders can easily get out of the contract after next season if things do not work out.
