Recalled Walmart dressers that federal regulators pulled from the market in the spring were sold to shoppers anyway, through liquidation and closeout sellers, after the recall had already taken effect. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission reissued the warning this week specifically to reach the families who bought them.
The distribution failure, not the furniture defect, is what is new. The tip-over hazard was announced three months ago. Regulators disclosed this week that Mainstays 9-Drawer Fabric Dressers continued to move into homes after that announcement, sold by four named companies in four different states. Families who bought a discounted dresser from a closeout retailer had no reason to think they were buying a recalled product, and no recall notice would have reached them through Walmart's customer records.
