Waitrose issues urgent recall for fish product as shoppers warned 'do not eat'

Premium UK supermarket Waitrose has issued an urgent recall for one of its fish products due to health and safety concerns.

The supermarket chain has recalled a batch of its 2 British Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout Fillets as it has been found to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) issued an alert warning customers not to eat the product as it could cause a serious illness if consumed.

Waitrose has said the product affected by the microorganism is a 125g pack that has a use by date of 11 June 2022. So far, no other batches are said to be affected.

The FSA has said that symptoms caused by this organism can be similar to flu and include high temperature, muscle ache or pain, chills, feeling or being sick, and diarrhoea. However, in rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications, such as meningitis.

Pregnant women, babies less than 1 month old and anyone over the age of 65 are more vulnerable to Listeria infections due to their weakened immune system.

Shoppers who have purchased the 2 British Hot Smoked Rainbow Trout Fillets with that use by date have been urged to return the product to store.

Waitrose has said customers can pack up the item and return it to store, with or without a receipt, to be provided with a full refund.

Point of sale notices explaining the reason for the product recall and explaining what shoppers need to do next can be found in Waitrose stores.

Waitrose has said: We apologise that it has been necessary to recall this product and for the inconvenience caused."

Shoppers can contact the Waitrose Customer Care service on 0800 188 884 , and by pressing option 4 .
