As the polls closed, a sense of winding down prevailed, with fluctuations in voter turnout observed throughout the day. Despite a lull in activity at one polling location, a significant number of voters had cast their ballots, with 532 votes recorded at that site alone. In Greenville County, approximately 66,000 individuals had participated in the voting process.

One voter, Kalani West, shared insights into her decision to support Nikki Haley in the primary election. West, not aligned with the Republican Party, aimed to influence the party's narrative by ensuring Haley's presence on the ballot. Expressing admiration for Haley's moral and ethical stance, West highlighted her preference for the candidate despite ideological differences.

South Carolina's open primary system allowed voters like West to cross party lines in their selections. Notably, the Democratic primary witnessed low turnout, with Joe Biden securing a significant victory. West's choice to participate in the Republican primary reflected a strategic decision to back Haley.

Regarding Haley's prospects, West expressed surprise at the candidate's strong showing, particularly in an area known for its support of former President Trump. Observing a shift in generational attitudes, West noted the younger demographic's independent opinions and growing support for Haley, signaling a departure from traditional influences.

While acknowledging the uphill battle for Haley, given the prevailing Trump support in the region, West's perspective echoed sentiments shared by other voters who strategically voted against the former president. The divide in voter preferences, evident in conversations with both Haley supporters and Trump voters, underscored the complex dynamics at play in the primary election.
