Forget Cobbler, Rabbit Keeper, Farmer and Sea Lore badges – Girlguiding has had a revamp.
Instead of requiring girls to demonstrate a strong knowledge of the deep blue sea, the ocean floor and associated trade routes, as the young bearers of its badges had to do in 1935 – or to fulfil the 1943 challenge of “keeping rabbits for one year, including rearing a litter” – the charity, which is the largest youth organisation in the UK dedicated to empowering girls and young women, has gone modern (and as some critics would say, “woke”). And it’s about time, too.
