A bridge built to carry thousands of vehicles across Virginia's waterways is getting a second life beneath them. As part of the $3.9 billion Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel expansion, crews are dismantling decades-old infrastructure and sending the concrete to artificial reefs in Chesapeake Bay, where it can provide shelter for marine life. By the time the project is completed, workers are expected to have removed around 100,000 tons of concrete, with 951 tons already delivered to Bluefish Rock Reef, according to a June report by WHRO.
