'Violent bully' abused ex and threw bricks through her window

A judge slammed a “bullying and violent” man who sent his ex abusive messages and threw bricks through her windows.

Adam Kay terrorised a woman who he had been in a relationship with, calling her a fat s**t and warning her “watch what happens next”. Liverpool Crown Court heard he also went round to her house, found a hammer and then used it to smash headlights on her car.

Today, Recorder Ian Harris labelled the 29-year-old’s behaviour spoilt and selfish. Catherine Ellis, prosecuting, said Kay was in an on-off relationship with the women but was ordered not to contact her after separate court proceedings last year.

Yet just months after the order was made he began to contact her. On one occasion on November 21, he abused the woman over calls and texts before going round to her home.

Ms Ellis said: “He went to the front door and she refused to open it. “He then went to the back of the property, came back in posession of a hammer, at which point she began recodrding with her mobile phone.

“He then went to her car outside and used the hammer to smash the front headlight.” Weeks later, on January 3, he threatened her and threw bricks through her ground floor windows.

In footage played to the court of this episode, children nearby can be heard screaming as Kay launched his attack. At various points before, during and after these incidents, Kay would send vile messages to his ex partner, calling her fat, ugly and using a range of demeaning language towards her.

Kay has a range of previous convictions, including for driving and drug offences. Mike Hagerty, defending, said the 29 year old, who appeared over video link from HMP Altcourse, regretted his behaviour.

Mr Hagerty said: “The defendant accepts, of course, that his behaviour through the course of these matters has been unacceptable. “There have been very unpleasant comments and unacceptable threats made.”

He said the defendant’s relationship with the woman had continued on and off despite the previous court case and said the woman accepted that she had at various points made efforts to contact him. Mr Hagerty said this provided a different context for his behaviour, as she had previously invited him into the house, but was no explanation for the violent and abusive incidents which followed.

He said: “He is sorry for what he has done. Perhaps most importantly he accepts that this relationship is over and he wants it to be over.” Recorder Ian Harris said Kay’s behaviour, towards his ex and later towards police, was “spoilt and selfish”.

“I find that you are a bullying and violent offender. You have behaved in a spoilt and selfish way.

“You wanted to get your way. You became violent and ill tempered when asked questions and this was evident even in interviews with police.”

Kay, of Caldy Grove, St Helens, was jailed for 22 months after pleading guilty to harassment and criminal damage.
