Late Monday night, it was reported that the Cincinnati Bengals will sign the top TE remaining on the market, 24-year-old Irv Smith Jr.
Here’s what Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell said about the young TE on Tuesday at the NFL spring meetings:
“He’s great with the football in his hand. We found ways. Screens. On some of the keeper game, the movement game. We found ways to get him the ball,” O’Connell said. “Once he has the ball in the open field, he’s very rarely going to get tackled by the first defender. He was having a great training camp and he had a little bit of a finger injury. It didn’t slow him down by any stretch because he was still out there working, getting acclimated in our offense.”
These comments were reported on the Bengals official team website and provide Bengals fans with details on what to expect from Smith, who looks to prove his worth on a contending team in 2023, saying he might be the missing piece to get the Bengals a Super Bowl win.
If Smith is as good with the football in his hands as O’Connell says, there aren’t many better quarterbacks right now to have to throw to you than Joe Burrow, which is one of the reasons Smith chose Cincinnati.
