Vigil held in Offaly to mark one month since Ashling Murphy's death

A vigil to mark four weeks since the death of Ashling Murphy is being held in Co Offaly this evening.

The young Irish woman was killed as she ran along the Royal Canal in Tullamore in Co Offaly back in January.

Killurin Community Alert and Development Group has decided to unite the community again to try and “provide some comfort to the Murphy family."

Among those attending the vigil will be music and sporting friends of the young teacher, who will gather at Killurin GAA Club at 7.30pm for a candle lighting ceremony.

Speaking to Midlands103, Co-organiser Ciara Kinnarney said they want to make sure Ashling's 'light' continues to shine on:

“We will also have a lighting of a candle, where we would love everyone to bring a candle with them that they will light off of it.

“Then we want them to bring it home to represent bringing home Ashling's light.”

Meanwhile, just last week an image of Ashling Murphy in her graduation gown was projected onto the main building at Trinity College Dublin as part of an event to mark St Brigid's Day 2022.

This was organised by Herstory, and was a celebration of women who have contributed to Irish society and culture.

A minutes silence was had by everyone in attendance on the night in memory of the 23-year-old.

An update was given this afternoon in relation to the case, after 31-year-old prime suspect, Jozef Puska, was taken into custody last month.

A court heard today that the Garda case file on the death of the young teacher will be submitted to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for directions in 10 days’ time.
