NARATHIWAT: A Vietnamese trawler was seized and its six crew arrested for fishing illegally in Thai waters off Muang district of this southern province.

Marine police spotted the Vietnamese vessel fishing in Thai waters about 27 nautical miles from the mouth of Bang Nara River on Wednesday evening, a senior marine officer told reporters on Thursday.

It was stopped. The crewmen were arrested and charged with illegally operating a commercial trawler, illegal entry and fishing illegally in Thai waters. A search found no illegal items on board.

The unknown boat had earlier been sighted by local fishermen, who reported it to marine police.
