Video shows BBC's Jeremy Vine almost plough into car while cycling

BBC presenter Jeremy Vine has sparked a debate online after sharing a video that shows him almost plough into a car in a cycle lane.

The TV and radio personality shared the footage on Twitter, alleging the driver cut him off as he turned left into the cycle lane, in front of him. Mr Vine claims the motorist said: "Sorry I didn't see you".

In his tweet he said the driver needs to "take a refresher course", despite the apology being "accepted".

The Highway Code states drivers are permitted to cross the solid white line of a cycle lane when turning left or accessing private property, but that they must give way to cyclists using the lane so they do not need to stop or swerve.

Footage shows the person in the car had indicated to turn, but Mr Vine suggests he didn't do so with ample time. The video, which has now been viewed and shared thousands of times, has prompted a flood of comments.

John said: "On this one I agree with you, terrible driving but glad you at least got an apology and you educated them", while Elizabeth said: "Not seeing someone is no defence". Megan said: "When I was learning how to drive, I was always told to check my side mirrors before indicating and turning to ensure there’s no approaching cyclists".

However, others disagreed. Pete said: "Bit of advice, when riding in a cycle lane and a driver starts indicating left, ease off your speed in case he's not seen you", and Paul said: "As a cyclist in London, if I had been in that situation, I would have clearly seen the car coming."
